The XKR is a sporty number that follows on from the XK pedigree. This means that its great on the track with its extremely responsive throttle, steering and brakes. This car is sharp and you can feel it wanting to push. Youre also more able to manhandle it than you are its cousin the XFR with whom it shares many of its basic traits. There is lots of torque with this car too and you can really feel this, especially when you change up from third to fourth. The XKR comes with a flappy paddle gearbox which again makes ideally suited to the track. The ride on the XKR is firm but not too hard, it feels nicely controlled which is just what you want when going around tight corners and sharp bends.

Practically, though, the Jaguar XKR is still ok. It was originally built as a grand tourer but has now moved to a more sporty model. You could still use it as a family car though. There is limited space in the back but you could fit small children in if necessary and there is a boot. Other practicalities arent a concern though. For those eco-warriors out there the XKR has a special system which means that the gas from the exhaust is recirculated internally and so the cars CO2 emissions are lower than with other cars – only 292g/km of CO2 is released. This is still in the highest bracket though so if the environment is your most important concern then perhaps this isnt the car for you. Its not cheap to run as its in insurance group 19/20 and tax on it is 35%. It also only does around 20mpg but if the main reason youre buying it is to peg round a track then this may not matter much.

The design of both the older and newer versions of the XKR are pretty similar with just the lower bumper and mesh grille being the only additions. There are also 10 alloys and a larger rear spoiler on the newer version. The Jaguar XKR is one of the prettiest Jaguars and always has been which is why you may not notice the additions to the newer version of the XKR. Inside, the trim has been changed and updated with different leather and aluminium. There is also blue mood lighting. As well as this there is a lot more technology in the car. All of these added things are why a used Jaguar XKR will cost you at least 9,000 and thats for an older registration.

This car shouts out film actor, rock star, millionaire – hell it frankly screams “my driver is powerful, successful and sexy” in its gr-gr-growly approach. Its smooth lines and sleek design are often mistaken for the Aston Martin by the amateur eye (particularly when viewed from the rear), giving it a real sense of the secret agent lifestyle. But its not just the appearance that gives this car its star quality. Under the bonnet it’s a winner too.

The XKR model comes with computer controlled suspension for an even greater sense of control, though in fairness the standard across the range is for an effortless ride.

When it comes to practicality, the XK coupe does a decent job. The hood is quick and smooth to lower, and even with the top down the cabin retains that serenity for which it is recognised. The seats are comfortable and supportive enough for long journeys, the wood and leather interiors are hand-crafted, not manufactured, charming yet traditional, and offer an even greater air of luxury to the car. There’s also a lot of gadgetry, indulging the James Bond effect even further, including computer controlled suspension and adaptive cruise control, while a fly-off handbrake situated to the driver’s right increases the sense of occasion.

The boot is large for a sporty model, larger than a Maserati and more than three times the size of a Porsche 911 coupe, and will easily take a long weekend’s worth of luggage, even with his ‘n’ hers golf clubs thrown in for good measure!

From a safety perspective, this is a car with a well-proven track record – some recalls, but nothing serious. Traction control and an abundance of airbags combine with a frankly enormous bonnet (providing a considerable crumple zone after all!) to give you the maximum confidence when driving. Add to this the Jag’s cruise control, slowing automatically in line with the vehicle in front of you, and an alarm and immobiliser as standard, and you can feel safe and secure at all times when cruising the countryside.

The XK coupe is an investment as long as it is kept in pristine condition – make sure you find a specialist garage to keep on top of repairs, and bear in mind that running and repair costs will be high. It’s also worth checking online for purchase recommendations relating to colour, as some hold a far higher residual than others. When buying a used Jaguar be sure to get a full service history – and remember, the newer you can afford, the better. This is one car for which later revisions make all the difference.

Tata Motors is still reeling under the weight of the debt resulting from the purchase, but is continuing to put money and development effort into the Jaguar arm. New models are coming out, some of which are more than mere rehashes of previous versions. The Jaguar XK line is one family of Jaguar model which exemplifies this. These cars have a lightweight but very stiff chassis which allows it to have a level of fuel efficiency not usually associated with this auto company’s products. This engine, combined with the improved chassis, allows the supercharged XKR Coupe to reach 100kph—about 60MPH—in just 4.8 seconds. Unfortunately, all models are electronically limited to 250kph, which is a limit automobile “hackers” will surely work on figuring out how to override.

The improvements to Jaguar’s cars don’t stop with under-the-hood changes. The new cars also look better, while keeping the classic parts of the Jaguar appearance that people like. The cabins have also been upgraded, with better trim and finishes that show off the craftsmanship Jaguar is known for.

All in all, these new Jaguars prove that the maker of the “world’s cheapest cars” knows how to handle a luxury line, at least when it comes to design, innovation, and satisfying new market demands like efficiency and reduced pollution. Now, all that is left is the marketing. Time will tell whether Tata Motors knows how to actually sell these fine automobiles, or if they will miss the boat when it comes to actually getting them off of car dealers’ lots and into buyers’ garages.
